What I always tell friends

If you’re thinking of spending a couple of days outside Bordeaux proper, consider focusing your trip around one area instead of trying to cram in too much. Saint-Émilion alone can fill an entire day or two easily, with vineyards, that medieval village, and some breathtaking views along the Dordogne River.

Also, try to book a chambre d’hôte (a local B&B) for at least one night,it’s a quieter, more personal experience than a hotel and often comes with homemade breakfast and great tips from your host. For example, La Maison du Poutic in Pomerol is a favorite of mine and feels like staying with old friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about multi-day trips around Bordeaux? Let’s clear up a few.

You can easily reach charming spots within a 1-2 hour drive, like Saint-Émilion or Arcachon. The countryside’s close enough to pop out and explore without stress, so expect to spend more time enjoying than sitting in the car.
If you like flexibility and discovering hidden places, going independent is great. But a good local guide can open doors, like a private tasting in a lesser-known chateau or insider stories you won’t find online. Depends on your vibe.
Late spring and early fall stand out to me, mostly for the weather and fewer tourists. September can be busy with the grape harvest, but it’s a special time to see winemaking in action.
Absolutely. Villages like Libourne and Sauveterre-de-Guyenne are welcoming and easy to navigate. Accommodation ranges from cozy B&Bs to small hotels. Just book ahead during high season, especially in wine country.
Public transport covers some key spots but can be limited, especially evenings or weekends. Renting a car gives you freedom, especially if you want to explore off-the-beaten-path wine estates or coastal areas at your own pace.
