Description
Set off at the Pey-Berland Tower, a stunning stand-alone bell tower. The exterior of the landmark is well worth admiring as an outstanding example of Gothic architecture. Together with the Cathedral of Saint Andrew, the tower was declared a French Historical Monument in 1862. Next, admire from the outside the majestic Cathedral of Saint Andrew. The grandiose Gothic construction, whose frontage is beautifully ornate, is the most beautiful and the most important religious building in Bordeaux, which has hosted hundreds of historic events, including the grand wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine and King Louis VII. Head to the Palace Gate, resembling a ‘Disney’ building. The structure, integrated into the city walls, offers a panoramic view across the city. From its river-facing side, the picturesque sight of the Pont de Pierre, the oldest bridge in Bordeaux, can be perfectly captured. Stop by Stock Exchange Square. It is surrounded by public buildings which represent the city’s classical and neoclassical architecture. Noteworthy are the monumental buildings of the former Stock Exchange and the Fermes Hotel in front of the square, which have symmetrical facades. The square has been the main meeting point largely thanks to Water Mirror. The world's largest reflecting pool, Water Mirror, makes up most of the square. By reflecting the surroundings on its vast surface, the pool somehow creates a fascinating 3D effect. It has gained popularity among locals and tourists as an ideal spot for cooling, relaxing, and people-watching. Move on to the National Opera. The Neo-classical theater is an architectural jewel which is so spectacular that the Paris Opera was inspired by this very theater. Especially, the imposing facade looks striking with 12 columns, each of which is surmounted by a stone statue representing 3 goddesses and 9 muses of Greek antiquity. Stop by Girondins Monument, built in memory of the Girondists, political martyrs. This monument, housing an impressive fountain with a group of massive, elaborate, and heroic statues, will unfold many thrilling stories about the turbulent history of France and the city itself. Take a stroll in the Public Garden, the last step of the tour. The garden is the city’s oldest green space dating back to the 18th century, and thus boasts several historic buildings, including an arboretum and a library, as well as a tranquil pond surrounded by well-shading centuries-old trees. You may find it hard to imagine such a lush area offering a lot of fresh air like this in the heart of a city!Includes
