Who could not fall in love with this crumbIing roman structure that once held over 10,000 spectators. Bring on the Gladiators! Well, OK, it was really an amphitheatre. This 3rd century structure is off the beaten urban path and hits your senses suddenly. It's such a contrast in a bustling Bordeaux neighbourhood. It was not until 1911 that the Palais Gallien ruin came under protection and alas, only the arches are left standing now. Go at night when the lighting makes this ancient Roman ruin quite magical but even during the day this is a special find. In the summer it is also a destination for film presentations. The topic 'Gladiators'! has been high on the list for screenings.
