Description
Located one hour by coach from Bordeaux, Saint-Emilion is a lovely medieval town surrounded by 5,500 hectares of vines; its landscapes were listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1999! Departure from the Bordeaux tourist office is by coach at 9:15 AM, and on the way to Saint-Emilion listen to your guide as they present the Bordeaux wine organization, the history of wine and the history of Saint-Emilion itself. At 10:00 AM, the 'heritage trail' leaves to visit Chateau Balestard la Tonnelle, a Grand Cru Classé in the Saint-Emilion appellation; the 15th century watchtower and the 21st century cellars show the age-old durability of this estate. Overlooking the vineyard of Balestard, the terrace allows to admire the vineyards as far as the eye can see. After the first visit and wine tasting, it is time to move on to Château Haut-Sarpe. This magnificent estate is one of few in Bordeaux that still provides accommodation and meals to pickers, and a whole hamlet has been set aside for this purpose. Enjoy lunch consisting of a buffet of local fresh products in the vintage dining hall, which offers spectacular views of the vineyards. The afternoon is devoted to the visit of Saint-Emilion sites including the underground church and the hermitage where the monk Emilion, who gave his name to the town, lived. You are then free to roam around the village's steep streets to discover cloisters, chapels, wash houses and intimate small squares at your own pace. Climb to the bell tower, buy souvenirs and taste the famous macaroons – there is almost too much to take in! At 5:15 PM it will be time to go back to Bordeaux by coach, arriving at around 6:15 PM.Includes
