Cave of Lascaux

The Cave of Lascaux was found by teenagers and their dog in 1940 and is now one of the world's most extraordinary finds of prehistoric art with wall paintings that are some 17,000 years old.
The actual cave is now protected and was closed in the early 1960’s because of exposure and damage.
The replica of the original, Lascaux II, is well worth a visit. It was created by masters of Les Beaux Arts in Paris who used the same pigments available to Cro-Magnom man. It has limestone walls with a 20 foot ceiling and replicas of bison, horses, boars, boars, and bulls.
When Piccasso visited the Cave of Lascaux he said, “We have created nothing new!”
The cave drawings are quite spectacular and well worth the day trip. Amazing to see the art of perspective dating to that period and then lost.
Try to go early as this site is very popular.
Do not put “Lascaux” into your GPS or you will find yourself in a small hamlet, Lascaux, high up in the hills getting lost and asking directions from patient locals. Put in Montignac or Grotte de Lascaux II.
